Traces of the Real

Traces of the Real was exhibited during September 2021 in the Rosny Cottage at Rosny Farm Arts Centre, Clarence Tasmania.

This exhibition combined the artistic talents of photographer, David Walker and ceramicist, Dawn Oakford. Each explores the intuitive possibilities of their chosen medium, resulting in a collection of stilled images and assemblages intended to draw the viewer in for closer contemplation.

Relying primarily on the basic functions of pinhole and plastic cameras, David records ordinary moments by capturing the essence of light distilled in a place or event. The resulting images when stilled for contemplation often reveal something perhaps felt at the time but only clearer upon a later viewing.

For Dawn, this exhibition was a departure from the high gloss and brightness of her ceramic tableware and an opportunity to explore an abstracted expression of landscape through organic clay forms. The work was more intuitive and a direct response to the texture and plasticity of this malleable medium.  Dawn created a range of textured ceramic structures – finished in muted, neutral colours and glazes.
